London Map

London is the capital of England and the United Kingdom. Located on the banks of the River Thames in the southeast of the island of Great Britain, the place dates back over two millennia ago, was founded around 43 by the Romans with the name Londinium.

The heart of the city, the ancient City of London, still retains its medieval boundaries, but at least from the nineteenth century, the name "London" has also referred to the metropolis that has grown up around it. Today, this metropolitan conurbation forms the London region of England and the Greater London administrative area, with its own mayor and assembly.

In Greater London there are four distinct sites as World Heritage: the Tower of London, the settlement of Greenwich, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, and the place covered by the Palace of Westminster, Westminster Abbey and the Church of Santa Margarita.

London's population is made up of a wide range of ethnicities, cultures and religions, and in the city there are spoken over three hundred languages.

In 2007 the official population was 7,512,400 in Greater London area. The Greater London Urban Area has a population of 8,278,251 and the metropolitan area, the largest of the EU, has an estimated population of 12 to 14 million people.

The public transport network, administered by Transport for London, is one of the largest in the world, and Heathrow Airport is the busiest international airport by passenger volume in Europe.

Greater London is divided into the City of London and 32 "London Boroughs" (municipalities). Neighborhoods are the main form of government in London and develop many civic services in the area of competence. The city is governed by a conventional city government, but by the historical Corporation of London.

The administrative distribution of London includes the following "boroughs" (district or local level administrative units in England):

Since 2008, Boris Johnson (Conservative) is the mayor of London.

The Greater London Authority was created in 2000. Previously, between 1965 and 1986, there was the Greater London Council.
